In a recent statement on X, formerly Twitter, Elon Musk announced that his social media platform, X Corp, will contribute all advertising and subscription revenue associated with the conflict in Gaza to hospitals in Israel, as well as the Red Cross/Crescent in Gaza.
This announcement comes amidst intense clashes between the Israel Defence Force and Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, resulting in over 13,000 casualties due to Israeli bombardments in the densely populated Gaza Strip.
The conflict has severely impacted hospitals, with major facilities like Al Shifa in Gaza facing operational challenges and critical supply shortages. Israel alleges that Hamas uses hospitals for military purposes, a claim denied by both Hamas and hospital staff.
Last month, Musk declared that Starlink, a satellite network developed by SpaceX, Musk’s space flight company, would provide connectivity to recognized aid organizations in Gaza. This initiative aimed to address communication and internet disruptions in the region caused by the conflict.
Starlink, designed to offer low-cost internet access to remote locations, is part of SpaceX’s broader plan to deploy a mega-constellation of approximately 42,000 satellites, with each satellite having a lifespan of around five years.
